NATHAN HALE

by Wayne Crawford

My friend says she loves U2,
the rock band descended
from the Rolling Stones.
She says Bono has a political
agenda but their music is so good
she can get over it. I wonder

what she would do if she knew
I will not volunteer my life
for my country, not
anymore. I wonder what would
happen if I told her I would rather have
my country die for me. I suspect

she would stop loving me and U2.
