WHEN JOHNNY

by Debra Kaufman

Draping the flag
over her shoulders
she said red is for blood
white for innocence
blue for the eyes of my Johnny-o

When Johnny comes marching
comes flying comes stumbling
comes home lost
behind his eyes so blue
so distant so furious so murderous

we'll give him a hearty welcome then
hoorah hoorah
