ODE TO LEAP DAY

by Earl J. Wilcox

Here we are again,
stumbling upon you,
most of us not
remembering you
in the shadows waiting
to come out
every four years---
myth-mixing with
factotum—
just a simple
24-hour day,
hardly a myth
at all to us
who were born
on this day.

Some say he’s seventy-four.
In leap years, he’s     a teenager.
Who’s counting.

Earl J. Wilcox founded The Robert Frost Review, which he edited for more than a decade. His poetry was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
