70 WORDS WE CAN SAY ON TV

PUNCH LINES FOR GEORGE CARLIN

by Earl J. Wilcox

Here lies a man of sorrow and mirth,
who crafted a joke better than Betty
Crocker baked a cake, showed us
a heart more often than Daddy
Warbucks, and loved the human race
despite believing most of us are not
much better than Swift’s Yahoos.
If somehow reincarnation is possible,
one could do worse than return as
George Carlin. Wherever he is tonight,
can we really imagine he’s at rest?

Earl J. Wilcox writes about aging, baseball, literary icons, politics, and southern culture. His work appears in more than two dozen journals; he has contributed 35 poems to the New Verse News.
