In this post-impressionist
dream, a pond is a pit
bordered by tar, mounds
of it like fire ant hills gone
septic from wounds the earth
was not made to bear.
Flowers on the water
dissolve in viscous mess:
diseased, mottled, shriveled;
the unholy stink of it.
