BASEBALL LAMENTATION

by Earl J Wilcox

Something there is that loves a baseball game:
its happy crowd---the hot dogs, cold beer,
the heat or cold.  Yet when my team’s behind
and the arcane infield fly rule pops into view,
we then hate the insane umps, the other team,
our cold dogs and warm beer but most of all
the chill of losing.

Earl J. Wilcox writes about aging, baseball, literary icons, politics, and southern culture. His work appears in more than two dozen journals; he is a regular contributor to The New Verse News. More of Earl's poetry appears at his blog, Writing by Earl.
