WALLS

by Phyllis Wax

Cartoon by R.J. Matson

are already being built.

It’s up to us
to chip at mortar,
remove bricks,
pull out pickets,
snip wire.

It’s up to us
to speak to people,
look them in the eye,
extend a hand,
smile.

We can undo
faster
than he can build.
