We stand
at the thin place:
crane our necks one way, and
we look upon the healthy faces
of our grandchildren, the other,
and an ungovernable force erases
all flesh. What do you think? Are the specters
phantasms or an inevitability?
Trick or Treat! shout the neighbor
boys. I let them be greedy—
why chide an impulse we share,
fistfuls of plenty
until we’re so glutted we’re
sick. After, they (we) spill
our booty on the floor
and make deals.
What isn’t gobbled up becomes landfill.
