SLEEPY AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER DELAYS PLANE LANDING

by Rochelle Ratner

It wasn't so much that he overslept, or that he
stopped for strong black coffee on the way to work,
but that he'd been dreaming. There was a crisp,
clear September sky. He was watching bodies –
women's or angels', he's not sure which – circling
around his bed. Dancers, perhaps. Every one of
them gracefully reaching out to him.

Rochelle Ratner's books include two novels: Bobby's Girl (Coffee House Press, 1986) and The Lion's Share (Coffee House Press, 1991) and sixteen poetry books, including House and Home (Marsh Hawk Press, 2003) and Beggars at the Wall (Ikon, October 2005).
