LABEL FABLE

Poem by Charles Frederickson; Graphic by Saknarin Chinayote

Labels for clothes not humanimals
One size doesn’t fit all
Designer names branding iron tattoos
Emaciated Small Medium Large Obese

Radical rebel crackpot loose cannon
Never fear stigma of non-conformity
Stuck on pressurized tinhorn cans
Empty suitcase excess baggage tags

Ivory ebony light/dark shades drawn
Nothing’s the gray matter flattery
Pastel chalk clean slate rewritten
Charcoal embers disintegrate into ash

Feminist misogynist communist socialist ToDolist
Queens princesses bisexual gay straight
No Passing judgment S-Curves Ahead
Stirs slurs his hers its

Hip-hop punk rock country jazz
Recording industry bigwigs bald-faced copywrongs
Twain interconnected Yahoos upstaging print
Poison pen stereotypes disappearing inkblots

Our nuanced existence defies labels
Musky bottled essence transcending categories
Human hearts non-conswervative liperal demoncrats
Virtuous sinner winners-losers draw
