A DIFFERENT KIND OF KOSHER

by Todd Friedman

Dirt under your fingernails, backbone straight,

you would be the New Jew.

Clearing the swamp, rifle ready,

no more lambs to the slaughter.

The world was with you, Israel,

Buchenwald’s emaciated ghosts still searing.

My grandmother shouted through tears for you

in a jam-packed Madison Square Garden.

You were our Samson fighting

the entire Philistine army.

When you captured Jerusalem, shofars blowing,

it was the Red Sea parting anew.

Who can forget that photo of your “crying paratroopers”

standing in front of the Wailing Wall?

But now every day your settlers descend the hills masked:

smashing cars, bashing heads, burning villages.

And like Joshua’s sun your army stands still—

or even aids in the slaughter.

This is what my grandfather fled from in Russia—

only there it was called a pogrom.

So here you are, the New Jew,

with ancient real estate “deed” and a different kind of kosher.

We now know that Samson

was blind to begin with—

and so were we.

AGAINST PURIM

by Barbara Ungar

ID 67399384 © Olga Kuevda | Dreamstime.com

Parading as Queen Esther in kindergarten
at my first carnival, in her long blue dress,
I tripped and tumbled off the low stage.
Yet I teach my son the fairy tale:

Queen Esther was a secret Jew, raised
by cousin Mordecai, who refuses
to bow down to Haman, who’s convinced the king
to kill all the Jews, so Esther risks her life
to reveal herself and plead. The king relents,
asks what to do to Haman. Mordecai says,
whatever Haman says to do to me. Haman says
hang Mordecai, so the king hangs Haman instead.
We rejoice: They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat
hamantaschen, tarts shaped like Haman’s hat.

Bored at my son’s Purim carnival
while his class intones Hebrew verses
no one understands, and the teachers mug
their way through the tale in drag, I read
the whole Megilla, realize this was Persia
(Iran), Esther was in a harem, and Haman
wasn’t hanged, but impaled on a fifty-foot stake.

As the kids trip, one by one, to the front
to chant if they can, or just read the Hebrew
with no vowels, or blush and break down
in tears, I read, yes, Haman did plan
to impale Mordecai (so it’s a grisly take
on the golden rule), but then they impale
all ten of Haman’s sons. At every mention
of Haman, everyone goes wild, twirling their noise-
making groggers and shrieking with laughter.

The besotted king gives Mordecai power so,
the text crows, our hero slaughters 75,000
of his foes in the city, and who knows
how many more in the countryside? This
we are enjoined to celebrate as Purim.
Party on. A vendetta thousands of years old.

Today, on Purim, I see photos of rows
and rows of graves dug side by side for
160 schoolgirls, and a video of an Iranian
man in tears, holding the hand of a six- or
seven-year-old girl, just the hand, all that’s left
of her. Of course we’ll pay in kind.
While the US vows vengeance for its seven
(so far) dead, Jew-hatred blooms across the world-
wide web, and for every murdered child,
how many will avenge?

JERUSALEM EVEN NOW

by Esther Cohen

Two sirens before 8 AM woke Ibtisam, a Palestinian,

and her Jewish neighbor Melila. They’ve lived

in the same Jerusalem building for decades.

In their pajamas, sleepless after the loud attack

the night before, they decided they’d clean

the building together, as something positive they

could do. And when they finished

removing spider webs and dust, they celebrated

the new cleanliness with mint tea

and homemade butter cookies.

Esther Cohen’s new book is All of Us.

CANCER JEW

by Howie Good

We’re told that life, it can be a wedding or a funeral, happy or melancholy, just depends if we act like mourners or celebrants, it’s our choice, whether we dab away tears of joy or shed ones of grief, responsibility for our happiness, we’re told in podcasts and internet articles and by subliminal suggestion, is entirely ours, regardless of the colossal forces, the shifting tectonic plates of geopolitics, the self-corrections of the market, that shape and direct our lives, that hurl us through a worrying present toward a future we already regret, tumors on eyes and nose and mouth and shadows congealing into a dark mass, a Jew lying on the ground, beaten to the point of death.

Note: “Cancer Jew” is a Dutch anti-Semitic slur.

IMMIGRANT’S SONG

by Jim Burns

Riots broke out in Philadelphia after Nativists burned down a Catholic church in May 1844. This lithograph shows the Know-nothings (in the top hats) clashing with the state militia.

Out of the vapors
of the past
I come
to sing you a song
of the poor and huddled masses
who have gathered at your gates.

I am the inscrutable Chinese,
one of 20,000 from my land
who for a dollar a day built your
grand railway of the golden spike.

I am the drunken Irishman,
the mobbed-up Italian,
the ignorant Pole
who sweated and died
to forge the iron and erect
your palaces of steel.

I am the Shylock Jew
whose sweatshop toil
made the clothes on your back,
but whose financial acumen you blame
for relieving you of your earnings.

I am the the suspected spy,
the German who had to change my name
to protect me from your Klan
when first our countries fought.

I am the devious Japanese whose family
were reviled as turncoats
and dwelt in your internment camps
while in Europe I fought and died for you.

I am the wild-eyed son of Middle Eastern deserts
denied entry into your land
and murdered in your cities
because of the evil of a few
who, like me, pray to Allah.

I am of those deemed not human at your southern border,
who braved deserts and human predators
to pick your crops, roof your homes,
tend your lawns,
do the jobs your sons won’t do.

Think of me as you will,
but Lady Liberty,
raise your torch to me.
I am America,
I am you.

L’SHANAH TOVA WISHES FROM ‘45’

by Jeremy Nathan Marks

When I lived in the western U.S.

people told me that as a Jew

I should value how the GOP

made religion the foremost

test for American citizens.

They said Democrats and Liberals

were secularists

secular meaning socialist

a.k.a. godless

there can be no covenant

no Eretz

unless you are free market capitalist

of course, socialism was

one of Zionism’s foundations

think Kibbutz for instance

Subtext: I should become a Jew for Jesus.

There are and have long been socialists

who are religious

their political-spiritual imagination

just happens to range beyond

the Rocky Mountains

or a golf course in DeSantis land

to touch the former ghettos of Europe

the current Cheders of Brooklyn

and Buenos Aires and lots of places

lost to the amnesiac memory

of rapturists.

Recently, ‘45’ wished my people

L’Shanah Tova before telling 70+

percent of us that we voted

to destroy America and Israel.

What I want to know is

if I change my voter registration

to Trumpist, will Kanye and Elon

also send me New Year’s wishes

How about Nick Fuentes?

DANIEL

by Jeremy Nathan Marks

Daniel Ellsberg, Whistleblower Who Exposed Top-Secret History of the Vietnam War, Dies at 92 —Slate, June 16, 2023. Photo: Dr. Daniel Ellsberg speaks to reporters Dec. 22, 2011, at Fort Meade, Maryland. PAUL J. RICHARDS/Getty Images via Slate.

I believe that to be a proper critic
you need to lead a platoon through
the shit

and sit on every side
of the table
read the cables
from embassies and fire
bases
compose a dissertation
on aptly named Decision
Theory

then join a think tank that took
its name from something as light
as Research and Development.

Nor would it hurt to graduate
from Harvard
and possess an IQ north
of the notes a Stradivarius
hits in the hands of prodigious
digits that can clean an M1
beneath a blindfold
like Jim Brown’s men
aboard the U.S.S. Tigerfish
in one of those Cold War consensus
flicks.

Daniel had it all
Ooh Rah
entering the Corps
because he was no paper
lion but under General Lansdale
read every last word emitted by the Pentagon
and courted charges under the Espionage Act
from men who believed the original sin
of American freedom was journalism.

But before people say
he was just another Eastern
Establishment Jew like Kristol
Bell Glazer or Chomsky
bear in mind Harvard had quotas

and Daniel grew up in Detroit
the same city where Philip Levine
discovered Garcia Lorca
who spoke of what was inside
forgotten little animals

when he lived in Gotham

but that could have been Hanoi
Hue or the Iron Triangle where Annam
Chorus Frogs warned peasants by their silence

Daniel defoliated the pretensions
of National Security
and for interests of state
we cannot now forget to say

Requiescat in pace
or better yet
hold for him a Minyan.

COSMOPOLITAN

by Catherine Gonick

Shirt available from TEEPUBLIC

When my father used the term for what we were
I didn’t know that cosmopolitan was code for Jew,
a proud but dirty word. I thought being rootless
was a good thing, that a cosmopolitan
was the being most at home in the world,
in cities and the wild, with people of every kind.
It was great to be an American, lucky to be born
into my nationality, but humanity—that word
was the most important one. I breathed in
this idea from my native air, the mild sun and
comforting fogs that daily swirled about
the newly established U.N. in San Francisco,
and all who lived loyally around the Bay, beings
from multiple races and nations, religions
and tongues. Even for those excluded
from the country club, the fraternity, good
neighborhoods and jobs, forced to stay
in ghettos, migrant fields, old cars,
beaten and imprisoned for wrong speaking,
that lovely air was equally available and free,
a promise and a sign. From Athens to Berkeley,
the flowers of democracy seem to have asked
for kind climates in order to grow strong.
Wanted: Cosmopolitan gardener able to plant
new words, root fair practices, clean air;
not afraid to get hands dirty.

Catherine Gonick has published poetry in journals including Live Encounters, Notre Dame Review, Forge, and Beltway Poetry Quarterly, and in anthologies including Support Ukraine, Grabbed, and the recently published Rumors, Secrets & Lies: Poems About Pregnancy, Abortion and Choice. She works in a company that slows the rate of global warming through projects that repair and restore the climate.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

by Peggy Landsman

To be a Jew
has little to do
with you,
who you are,
what you believe in.

To be a Jew
has everything to do
with the world…

Is it big enough
for us
to live in?

Peggy Landsman is the author of a poetry chapbook, To-wit To-woo (Foothills Publishing). Her work has been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies, including The Muse Strikes Back (Story Line Press), Breathe: 101 Contemporary Odes (C&R Press), Nasty Women Poets (Lost Horse Press), Mezzo Cammin, The Ekphrastic Review, and a previous issue of The New Verse News. She lives in South Florida where she swims in the warm Atlantic Ocean every chance she gets.

HALLOWEEN FOR A NEW GENERATION

by Lois Leveen

It's odd to dress up
as a Jew when you
are already a Jew
but I do. Costume
myself in calf
length skirt, bright blue
blouse, covered head. The nose
I have with me always.
At my throat, sixteen
carat  מָגֵן דָּוִד shield of David
dangling from rope
chain. I clutch prayer
book instead of purse.
Apply make up to make
a bullet hole between my eyes, another
at my heart.

When I arrive at the party
vampires and zombies
snub me. Skeletons turn
their scapulared backs.
A werewolf at the punchbowl
mutters asshole.
Undaunted by the undead
I search the crowded room for a black
kid killed in the park by a cop,
queers of color gunned down
on the dance floor, teacher
and students schooled
to death by a lone shooter, any one
of fifty-eight massacred country
music festival attendees. But not even
the Sikh slain for being
Muslim has come. You're a fright
to behold! screams
the glow-in-the-dark tshirt of the ghoul
who tells me to leave. A fright not
to be held in this house
of horrors, I step into the dark
and stormy night of America. America opens
its arms to ones like me.

Lois Leveen is old enough to remember when adults didn’t go to Halloween parties and children to go through active shooter drills in school. She is the author of the novels Juliet's Nurse (Simon and Schuster) and The Secrets of Mary Bowser (HarperCollins). Her poetry and short prose have appeared on/in Ars Medica, The Atlantic, Bridges: A Jewish Feminist Journal, The Chicago Tribune, cloudbank, Culminate, Hawai'i Pacific Review, The Intima, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Millions, Monkey Puzzle, The New York Times, NPR, and The Southhampton Review; one of her poems is inscribed on a hospital wall.

DOMESTIC GODDESS

by Katherine Smith

I do my best to ignore the news
vacuuming carpets, scrubbing goo
from microwave and screen.
I polish floors, un-tarnish green

copper tea kettles, pots that gleam.
I pay the bills, and bake a cake,
greet some evangelists, even take
a pamphlet from their little boy.

Though I’m a Jew and they are goy,
I wish the family Easter joy.
They spread across the neighborhood
this day that I devote to chores.

They preach good news from door to door
this Sunday the cable journalists
report to work, for T***p has pissed
off in a single week, the globe

from loving pope to xenophobe,
Syria, Russia, Britain, North Korea,
Christian, Jew, Sunni, Shia.
While North Korea serenades

an anniversary with grim parades
of weapons, and democracy devolves,
T***p relaxes with a game of golf.
I cook and clean with half my ego

adrift through Seoul, Aleppo, Mar-a-lago.

Katherine Smith’s previous publications include appearances in Poetry, Cincinnati Review, Missouri Review, Ploughshares, Southern Review and many other journals. Her first book Argument by Design (Washington Writers’ Publishing House) appeared in 2003. My second book Woman Alone on the Mountain (Iris Press), appeared in 2014.

SPECTRUM: NOVEMBER 8, 2016

by Deborah Kahan Kolb

The day the red-ones drew the curtains and chose the orange-one
to mind the white oval that had embraced the black-one
nearly three thousand days --- that day

was the day the blue-ones formed
a veined parenthesis to contain the pulsing mass
of the red-ones, spilling sideways,

was the day the red-ones and the blue-ones
never turned to purple and the green-ones
stayed scattered, shoots pushing up to be counted,

was the day the brown-ones huddled and burst, and
waited for the white-ones, the eye-holed pointed ones,
to bear a burning broken cross, its twisted arms akimbo,

was the day the pink-ones, like the blue-one who
missed her grip at the finish, snatched steel from
between their legs and bound themselves each to each,

was the day the tan-ones veiled themselves
into invisibility,

was the day the yellow-ones shifted, and strove
for the exits,

was the day the beige-ones bent double, and breathed
dios mio,

was the day the rainbows clung together, their colors melted
and shriven,

was the day a keening Hallelujah rose up from the teeming streets
and evanesced into the violet sky,

was the day I waited for the raging ones to bring a yellow star
for me.

Deborah Kahan Kolb is the author of the forthcoming chapbook Windows and a Looking Glass (Finishing Line Press, 2017). Her work has appeared in Poetica, Veils, Halos & Shackles, and Voices Israel. She lives in Bronx, NY.

IF THEY SAY "JEW"

by Michael Fisher

if they say “jew,” or
if they say “muslim”

if they say “greedy,” or
if they say “dirty”

today is my birthday
I spent it watching the numbers come in from Gaza
refreshed my browser window over and over

mathematically, one number is always greater
than another

if they say “rag-head,” or
if they say “kike”

if they say “zionist,” or
if they say “jihadist”

the Gaza strip neighbors Israel and Egypt
it is home to 1.816 million or less

my own neighbor has a chocolate lab
and a gun

he hates that I can't change my oil,
build a shed, hates that I
spend my days reading books and the news

I hate that he never considered the morality of chaos theories
and loves classic rock

still, when I pull in, I look out for the lab
he waves and adjusts his baseball cap when he sees me

can it be that easy?

they say “sub-human,” “terrorist,”
“child-killer,” “fascist,” or
they say “genocide,” “genocide,” “genocide”

I shut down my computer for the night
tomorrow numbers will grow

I wish I could say I watched the fireflies
surround the bright eyes of a dog through my window

Michael Fisher is the author of Wolf Spider from Plan B Press and Libretto for the Exhausted World on Spuyten Duyvil Press.
