ASSYMETRICAL WAR

by Paul Burgess

Cartoon by NICK ANDERSON @andertoon.bsky.social

They’re hoping schools won’t rain as rubble showers
resulting from an errant missile strike.
I can’t afford the drive to see the flowers
around the gorge I’d waited months to hike.
They fear they’ll find their children split in half
or buried under shrapnel, dust, and rocks.
I’m scared the jagged line upon a graph
will show decreasing values of my stocks.
Their sky’s become an endless sea of threats
erupting with the sights and sounds of war,
but over here, we’re making mobile bets
on every prop the market’s apps can score.
There’s something vaguely troubling, sad, and dark
about an age of gulfs so deep and stark.

PROVE THAT YOU MATTER

by Paul Burgess

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz defended President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” over criticism that millions of people could lose health coverage, saying those who would face new work requirements should “prove that you matter.”… Close to 11 million people would lose health insurance coverage if the House Republican tax bill passes in the Senate, mainly due to cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, according to analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. —The Hill, June 5, 2025

To prove how much you truly matter, folks,
You might attempt the art of sneaky sales
And master phrases used to slyly coax
The world to buy a "cure" that always fails.

Perhaps you'll never get a cabinet post
By selling useless pills on sketchy shows,
But every friendly ratings-chasing host
Ensures your market value swiftly grows.

So, get to work and earn your Medicaid
By hawking tonics made from oil of snakes
And pills containing rhino horns and jade
Or tiger kidney anti-aging shakes.

You've been so useless from your journey's start,
But here's your chance to really do your part.

FEEDING THE FAT CATS

by Paul Burgess
Republican bill cuts food aid for elderly, low-income, & disabled Americans and increases funding for their own version of Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program. —Ann Telnaes, May 2

Ensure that butter fills the bowls of batter,
And watch the oven while the mixture bakes.
The fattest cat will soon be getting fatter
Once fed these massive overfrosted cakes.

Then, offer up your children's hamster pet,
The cuddly thing with white and brownish fur,
And thank the Lord the fattest cat you've met
Has deigned to eat your food and give a purr.

Now, find a book of ancient magic words
And learn the phrase you'll have your family say
To turn yourselves to tiny, harmless birds
That Mister Fats will swallow as his prey.

And soon you'll be a bone-and-feather lump
Excreted from your idol's noble rump.

NO ROOF, NO DOOR

by Paul Burgess

AI-generated graphic by NightCafé for The New Verse News.

To get the house of which I'd dreamed,
The fastest route, or so it seemed,
Was knocking down each door and wall,
Destroying ceiling, den, and hall.
With wrecking ball, I'd swiftly smash
And relish every violent crash.

The pile of rubble where I stand
Was all I'd thought about or planned.
Rebuilding seemed the easy part,
But now I wonder where to start.
I'd barely planned the building's frame,
But bragged I'd surely put to shame
The house in which I'd lived before,
Yet now, I've got no roof, no door,
No wires, no pipes, but just a heap
Of rubble where I'll have to sleep.

DEMAGOGUERY FOR DUMMIES: LYING WITH IMPUNITY

by Paul Burgess

President Trump’s shifting positions and outright lies have presented the American public with dueling narratives at every turn. —The New York Times, March 8, 2025

When caught in bold, apparent lies,
Just look accusers in the eyes
And flash a grave, offended frown
While digging in to double down.

When people say they've gotten proof,
Declare their sources stand aloof
From all that's decent, true, or fair
And freeze them with an icy stare.

Then take their claims and throw them back
And wear them out with your attack.
Their armor takes no time to rend.
They came to charge and not defend.

Insist they envy all your fame
And labor hard to smear your name.
To get the mob to take your side,
Appeal to people's sense of pride.

Convince them that their brains are wired
To see the way your foes conspired
And other folks are not as smart
Or simply play the villain's part.

What's true will shortly be defined
In only ways you have in mind.
Their truth's not worth a bag of beans
Because you'll change what “honest” means.
