RISE, YOU BLACK MAGIC WOMAN

In 1692 Sarah Good, wrongly accused

of witchcraft, was hanged. Her daughter, 

Dorothy Good, also wrongly accused, 

was imprisoned at just four or five years old.

A week into 2026 Renee Nicole Good 

was executed by a lawless ICE agent.      

A poet, Renee’s power was paying attention, 

putting what she witnessed into lyrical, exquisite 

words that touched hearts, won prizes.  

Vance, Trump, and other talking heads

haven’t yet labelled Renee a witch, 

but they use hateful phrases to describe her–– 

evil, brainwashed, radicalized, disruptor, 

and domestic terrorist. They spread lies,  

pretending to prove untruths. 

They fear Renee’s strength. They’re frightened 

by her memory, anxious that our gathering crowds 

will confirm their impotence, reveal

their profound malevolence.

They’re not wrong to be afraid. 

Though they burn us down

with tear gas, pepper spray, bullets, 

slander us in kangaroo courts,  

they can’t stop seeing

our covens grow.

Our brew overflows now––

loud, fierce and unstoppable!

that if unchosen, a woman’s home is her prison?

SPIT IN A TUBE

As soon as the genetic testing company 23andMe filed for bankruptcy on March 23, 2025, concerns about what would happen to the personal information contained in its massive genetic and health information database were swift and widespread. A few days after, a U.S. judge ruled that the company could sell its consumer data as part of the bankruptcy. —Gizmodo, April 7, 2025.

23andme is out of cash
but they have all my DNA
Boy, would I like to settle their hash
get my stuff back from them today

Someone could cook a clone of me
build a murderer or pedophile
I could turn out more horrible
morphed into a raptor or reptile 

Would they use my letters
to cause harm to me and mine?
Or, could it work out for the better
to improve the basic design

A version thinner prettier funnier
someone proud to wear my name
Or, the duplicate only in veneer,
my identity would claim

So, if they have people’s recipes
a new world could they create 
of peace, tolerance tranquility
a universe free of hate

Where Trump and his minions
Bannon Rubio Musk Vance and Waltz
are on a garbage scow due north of Greenland
ice-bound ‘til they express remorse

I hear that people who shouldn’t be in this country are eating pets

I see state troopers at schools in Springfield, Ohio

I hear a candidate say “I have to create stories so that the media pays attention”

I see Springfield’s CultureFest cancelled over safety concerns

I hear what the 45th president said: people from Haiti “all have AIDS”

I see colleges in Ohio holding classes remotely

I hear lawful residents in Ohio called “illegal aliens”

I see elementary schools evacuated due to dozens of bomb threats

I hear what our country’s former leader said: Haiti is one of the “shithole countries” 

I see my Haitian friend promote her book on achieving a just economy

I hear a member of the Haitian community say

“We’ve been receiving a lot of threats, physically and verbally”

I hear parents say that their children are terrified

 

I hear people say that they are still undecided about their vote
