ALL IN THE FAMILY

by Alan Walowitz

Maybe you wake up cranky again,

and the sun’s unwelcome as ever

through the broken slat in the blinds.

You holler across the hall,

You’ve got to make something of your life.

Then, he hardly stirs when you go to shake him,

but he tells you of his plan to kill you.

There’s no use talking it out.

No coming to some understanding.

He means it this time

Sometimes, I get crazy thoughts myself—

I’m too old for this.

What’s left of my youth

has leached out slow like air from a tire.

How murder is where we come from,

Cain and Abel, the Flood, and then the Golden Calf—

which was only a sign of our shared impatience.

So, you take him to some tangled place

and it all unwinds like a movie,

part of you watching, and part of you

present in a way you’ve never been.

Maybe you’re hoping some voice intervenes.

You’d gladly call it God, if the script requires,

though you’re probably considering the headlines,

the generations to come who might never understand.

Or, perhaps, there is no voice.

and it's just you, come to your senses.

No matter. Chances are he’ll only remember

a trip to the country, just a kid and his dad.

A nice enough day, the story might go,

except for maybe this cheap device

that never would solve anything:

the bleat of another innocent animal,

caught in the brambles, ready or not,

to take our place.

AN EARLY AUDIENCE: JANUARY 23, 2022

by Wu “Sacred Bee” Li

The Red-capped Cock-man has announced the Coming of the Dong .
The Keeper of the Robes is bringing terror to Taiwan.
The heavenly nine doors re-ve-al thirty-nine aircraft.
The coats of many countries kowtow to the Golden Calf.
Sunlight has entered into the Cheat’s craven carven plans.
Incense and hatred round the Dragon spread to many lands.
The Chengdu J-10 fighters, electronic spotter planes,
and the Shenyang J-16 jets roar out enraged refrains.
The audience hears edicts, blue, black, yellow, red and white,
a Phoenix phalanx sent forth by the Secretariat.

Wu “Sacred Bee” Li is the latest anagrammatic pseudonym of a New Verse News regular. This poem draws on a poem from the Tang dynasty by Wang Wei (王維, 701-761). Dong means East.

THE GOLDEN CALF

by Ed Shacklee

Photoshopped image by Freelancer at DemocraticUnderground.com.

Times were hard -- the fearful crowd, unruly,
felt they'd become a television serial
whose laughter track embarrassed them unduly;
they longed for prose both purple and imperial.

The promises the idol strung together
were catchy nonsense jingles if they'd listened.
Its hide, so thin, was stitched from shopworn leather.
A fool could tell it wasn't gold, but glistened;

but they were sold, for God was dead or missing --
the brazen moos would answer every prayer.
What did it matter what the snake was hissing?
The Trojan Horse was none of their affair.
