100

by Tom Bauer

That many days since they went marching in.
A hundred turns of horror and eyeballs
peeled back and fixed upon the safe truisms:
that this is what it is and this is wrong.

Emotions are the rulers here, not horror.
Are we urged to cry for the babes in earth,
unseen and unsung, dispatched with certitude
to certain doom for good truisms we love?

I’m like a gumshoe, just want the facts, ma’am.
No need to tell me who is right or wrong,
trying to convince me you know the real truth.
Who speaks true when murder is the argument
to prove the virtue of the cause? I can’t
see past the fact the top guys are getting paid.

Tom Bauer grew up playing violin and listening to spoken word recordings. When he was ten, he rashly announced he was going to be a poet. He did a bunch of university and stuff. He's had some poems published. He lives in Montreal and plays board games.

FIRST 100 DAYS TRIOLET

by Marjorie Maddox

Cartoon by STEPeHEN

Ridiculous standards to hold me
to standards. Huuuge mistake
to mistake me for me.
Ridiculous. Standards can’t hold me;
I’ll flip-flop alternate news. Bigly
mistake by media to mistake
standards for ridiculous me. Hold me
to standards? Huuuge mistake!

Marjorie Maddox has published eleven collections of poetry—including True, False, None of the Above (Poiema Poetry Series and Illumination Book Award medalist), Local News from Someplace Else, and Wives' Tales as well as the short story collection What She Was Saying (Fomite Press) and over 500 stories, essays, and poems in journals and anthologies.

THE 100 DAYS

by Anne Graue

mark the number
of days of falling
into loss
no handholds
only slippery ones
hanging loosely
from tongues
from threads
beckoning, urging,
cajoling—Hang on
to me! Gotcha!
underwater blips,
radar, red herrings
falling still past
the 100
looking further
down
hundreds more
beckon
want to be spent—
hold onto that longing—
taunt with ropes,
scaffolding,
promise news
further down
much further down.

Anne Graue writes poetry and teaches online from her home in New York's Hudson Valley. Her poems have appeared in Compass Rose, Sixfold Journal, VerseWrights, and The 5-2 Crime Poetry Weekly. She is a reviewer for NewPages.com.
