GRĒNLAND UNFÆST (GREENLAND OFF-BALANCE)

by Zumwalt

President Trump announced in a social media post on Saturday morning his latest strategy to get control of Greenland: He is slapping new tariffs on a bloc of European nations until they come to the negotiating table to sell Greenland. —The New York Times, January 17, 2026

“Greedy for Greenland,” the great leader uttered,
Musing on military modes of grabbing.
“Shale and shield,” he shouted out loud,
White House words woke up the world!

Old World earls offered their swords,
Rallying round the Realm of the Danes.
Pushing back promptly against pressure and might,
Frederiksen fierce, flashed her reply:

“If force is flaunted on frozen shores,
Strikes from the States shatter our league;
Broken the bridges of brotherhood built,
NATO is nuked—if neighbors clash!”

Damning the Danes in deep standoff,
“Lay down the law!” the leader swore.
Taxing with tariffs those tribes that balk:
"Gobble up Greenland, get all we can;
If that game goes bad, go grab Iceland!"

Zumwalt's poetry explores themes of alienation, shifting reality, and personal adaptation. Recent work has appeared at Ink Sweat and Tears.

ON THE ARRIVAL OF MOSQUITOES IN ICELAND

by Pepper Trail

Iceland reports the presence of mosquitoes for the first time, as climate warms —NPR, October 22, 2026

The ice is going, the ice of Iceland

Gone are the herring and the codfish

What we harvest now are tourists, so many

They fill the high tower of the Hallgrímskirkja

They fill the restaurants, avid for puffin and whale

For bits of fermented shark, all those bygone tastes

And following them, now the mosquitoes have come

Carried north on the world’s sickly southern breath

Bringing us a different misery than those we loved

Thirsting for a taste of our unmoved Nordic blood

Yet still, we are given our island’s dark comedy

The earth opening and closing beneath our feet

And above, through our unbroken nights

Wavering curtains of unearthly light

AN OKWARD SITUATION

by Julie Steiner

Video published on Aug 19, 2019

Since "jökull" means "ice sheet," not "rock,"
we're re-christening Okjökull "Ok."
By the time we re-brand
balmy Iceland as "Land,"
will we stop calling climate change "schlock"?

Julie Steiner is a pseudonym in San Diego. Besides the TheNewVerse.News, the venues in which her poetry has appeared include the Able Muse Review, Rattle, Light, and the Asses of Parnassus.

SALLY SELLS WHAT SHE SELLS OFFSHORE

by Paul Smith

Sally sold seashells by the seashore
Now Sally sells tax shelters offshore
To shills
From Iceland to Russia to Singapore
To anyone who wants to get their foot
Out the door
Of wherever they are
Into an Octopus’s Garden
As snug and quiet as the ocean floor
Sally’s Pa’s from Panama
Sally’s Ma’s from Panama
Sally’s Pa and Ma from Panama
Showed Sally how she could
Dodge the law
And make an easy dollar
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Maritime bunco
Where the trade winds blow
But one unhappy sailor
Who was sore at Sally’s sharpies
Blew the whistle on her
I swear it’s true
Your Honor!
Now
Sally’s seeking shelter
She’s swimming helter-skelter
From the law of every country
With a seashore and a lawyer
