MY BIASED DREAMS

by Cindy Hill

A boat carrying around two dozen migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya on Saturday, with at least 19 people missing and presumed dead, authorities said. Libya’s coast guard said that a group of 23 migrants—both Egyptians and Syrians—set off from the eastern city of Tobruk earlier in the day. Three migrants were rescued and taken to hospital. Only one body was retrieved and search efforts were ongoing, the agency said. The shipwreck is the latest tragedy at sea involving migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean from the North African nation in a desperate attempt to reach European shores. Libya has emerged as the dominant transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, hoping for a better life in Europe. —The Washington Post, March 13, 2022. I dreamt about a girl, thirteen years old,
walking from Kyiv wearing a dark teal down
puffer coat, a white knit hat with pompom,
and her cousin’s moon boots, which kept the cold
away, though they’d seen better days. She rolled
her eyes and tugged her earbuds out, then frowned
and waited for her brother. She sat down
on tumbled piles of broken concrete, scrolled
through her phone, then arms-length, took a selfie.

I never dreamt a girl in Syria
was walking to the border of Turkey,
or of a girl escaping Libya
by boat, destined to sink in storms of dread,
though each had been alive, and now was dead.

My deep-sleeping brain may have remembered
how my great-grandmother’s remaining kin—
slaughtered by Ceausescu on a mountain
pass—were not so far away, as black birds
fly; and those wheat fields that I’ve seen pictured
on the news called to mind her deep-scarred shins,
sliced by brother’s scythe as they dropped grain in
sheaves then stacked in golden stooks. English words
could not console her for what had happened.

I dreamt about a girl whose looks I knew,
whose patterns were the same as those I’ve drawn
in cross-stitch on a pillowcase in blue
and gold or black and red, in sheaves of wheat
I’ve etched with cotton thread. I never dreamt
of girls whose stories I have never read,
though they had been alive, and now are dead.

SHIPWRECK OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA

by Eswer El Cubadi

At least 52 people died after a boat carrying around 180 refugees and migrants sank off the coast of Tunisia on Saturday. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is deeply saddened at this latest tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea and is concerned about the high number of people dying on the Central Mediterranean route with over 700 dead or missing so far in 2018. —UNHCR, June 5, 2018; Meanwhile, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini (in photo) says he will stop migrants trying to reach Europe via Sicily. – EPA pic, June 4, 2018.

"Can I escape from fell Charybdis and ward Scylla off?"
—Homer, Odyssey, Book 12, Lines 115, Odysseus to Circe

At Sfax, the news was horrible—five dozen dead—and more,
near to Kerkennah Island off of north Tunisia's shore.
Increasingly the human traffickers launch people from
Tunisia, now that Libya is tighter than a drum.
The boat was packed with migrants fleeing Africa to be
free from the lives they do not like for hope in Italy.
But, o, alas, the relatives of those who learned the worst,
their souls, like Dido's when Aeneas left her, are accursed.
But further off, up north, Salvini said at Sicily,
"We will no longer be the camp for Europe's refugees."

CONSPIRACY THEORETICAL WITCH HUNTS

by Richard Hacken

Hillary, it has been shown, created ISIS.
Everything we know shows how that terror crisis
Came from Clinton’s wicked wish to sacrifice us.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

In Libya she only made things worse, because she
Purposefully waited to send in the posse
At the embassy when needed in Benghazi.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Email servers were her tools of choice for treason
As she lured and let the spies of the Chinese in,
Laughing as she lied about her sordid reason.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Shocking to our sensibilities as humans,
Hillary dropped bombs less ethical than Truman’s,
Pimping out her husband to young female students.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Hillary remains untouched by House committees
Searching hard to bring her down by her Achilles,
While bribes she paid stack up in banks in offshore cities.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Richard Hacken enjoys trochaic political satire.  While slightly amused by conspiracy theories and witch hunts, he hates to see them linked to each other.

INVISIBLE

by Michelle Marie

Source: NY Daily News

nothing is fixed
not the broken boat on the water
not the broken lives fleeing the forces of war
not the broken system that dehumanizes and deports

nothing stands
between those on board and
the breaking of the waves
not the luck that never holds out
not the promises that never pan out
not the border patrol that refuses to look out

for a ship lost at sea
in waters that never deceive:

only when your image is no
longer reflected in the water
do you begin to see yourself
the way the world sees you

THE BOOMERS' BURDENS

by Tricia Knoll

BBC Panorama has released footage of an apparent incendiary bombing of a playground in Aleppo, northern Syria, with 15-year-old Ahmed (pictured) among those injured. --The Independent (UK), Aug. 30, 2013.

We sang we ain’t gonna study war no more
no more, no more, no more
     no one really believed it

we boomers
the children of sixteen million who came home
after the nuking of Hiroshima, Nagasaki
children of ones who liked Ike
we cowered under desks, in pencil dust,
        from atomic bombs
     everyone said wars were cold
we couldn’t watch the war in Korea over dinner
       some people forgot

no one said World War II was the war to end all wars
there’s no believing that in death camps
there’s no hiding the snow and dust
     of camps in Tule Lake

Viet Nam: our lovers talked about Canada
we sang, we marched, we swore
war was no longer cold, just secret
    the agents were orange
    we heard death counts
    veterans came home, stooped
       to pick up pieces

We have been there
green rocket traceries on the night sky
      friendly fire, civilian casualties
      surgical intervention minus surgeons
     Operation Desert Storm    Panama    Libya
     Afghanistan   Iraq   Somalia
     Syria

we declared wars
   on poverty    hunger     terror
in the name of enduring freedom

I stand here today tempted to lay my burdens
down -- but there’s no safe place for rusted freedoms.
         Our children are hungry.
         They cannot afford higher education.
         We are still afraid.
