THE FIFTH OF JULY

by Michael L. Ruffin

The Fifth of July, 1776.
Mr. Jefferson, contemplating.
Thinking about what they have started.
Pondering the struggle that lies ahead.
Wondering how long it will take to secure
the independence they have declared.

The Fifth of July, 2021.
I, contemplating.
Thinking about how far we've come.
Pondering the struggle that still lies ahead.
Wondering how long it will take to secure
real liberty and true freedom for all of us--

for every last one of us.

And it occurs to me:
it is always the Fifth of July
in the United States of America--
and it always will be.

CONGRATULATIONS

by Michael L. Ruffin

In a 5-4 ruling, the US Supreme Court sided with religious organizations in a dispute over Covid-19 restrictions put in place by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo limiting the number of people attending religious services. —CNN, November 26, 2020

Let us congratulate
the people of faith
who successfully
used the secular courts
and the secular Constitution
to secure their right
not to do what their
faith should compel
them to do willingly,
voluntarily, and gladly:
care about people.

GOOD FOOLISHNESS

by Michael L. Ruffin

We've been through
some bad foolishness
the last four years.

We'll go through
more foolishness
the next four.

We'll see efforts to do
foolish things such as

expand health care,
address climate change,
deal rationally with pandemics,
address systemic racism,
follow science, and
seek economic fairness.

Such efforts will
face resistance,
confront opposition, and
be labeled radical.

They'll make progress.
We'll make progress.

Get ready
for more foolishness,
for necessary foolishness,
for meaningful foolishness,
for compassionate foolishness
for positive foolishness,
for helpful foolishness
for hopeful foolishness.

Get ready
for good foolishness.

PONDERINGS OF A HALF-DECENT (MAYBE) WHITE MAN

by Michael L. Ruffin

The White Man (1907) by Lyonel Feininger

I'm so very tired
of the injustice.
I wonder how
exhausted I'd be
were I its victim.

I'm so very tired
of the racism.
I wonder how
exhausted I'd be
were I its target.

I'm so very tired
of the misogyny.
I wonder how
exhausted I'd be
were I its prey.

I'm so very tired
of the privilege.
I wonder how
exhausted I'd be
were I not its beneficiary.

FOOLS AND LOSERS

by Michael L. Ruffin

My Fools
My grandfather (Army fool, Europe, WWI)
My father (Navy fool, Pacific, WWII)
My father-in-law (Marine fool, Pacific, WWII)
My uncle (Army Air Corps fool, Europe, WWII)
My three brothers-in-law (Air Force, Army, and Marine fools, Vietnam)

My Losers
My mother's (before she was my mother) fiance (Army loser, killed in France, WWII)
My cousin (Army loser, wounded in Vietnam)
My fifth-grade teacher's husband (Army loser, killed in Vietnam)

I know, and I hope
you know, that
they aren't really
fools and losers.

I also know, and I hope
you also know, that
anyone who thinks they are
is a fool and a loser.

It takes a real fool to think
of service as foolishness.

It takes a real loser to think
of sacrifice as losing.

KEMPED

by Michael L. Ruffin

Cartoon appears with permission. All right reserved.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp sues Atlanta's mayor to stop her from requiring masks as COVID-19 cases skyrocket. —Yahoo! News, July 17, 2020

Here in Georgia,
we have folks who
are neat and organized,
and we have folks who
are disheveled and chaotic.

In short, some of
us are kempt,
and some of
us are unkempt.

Sadly, from a gubernatorial
perspective, we are
universally Kemped,
which means to be
governed by someone
with little regard for science
and less concern for people
(“DeSantised” is a
close synonym).

We have mayors
doing their best to
lead in unKemped
ways by adopting
science and compassion-
driven policies. But the
governor is trying to
stop them from doing
all they can to save
lives because—well, I
don’t know why.
Politics, I guess.
And power.

Anyway, I hope when
November 2022 arrives,
Georgia will become
the most unKemped
state in the nation.

OPEN CARRY

by Michael L. Ruffin

“‘I Need People to Hear My Voice’: Teens Protest Racism.” High school students have organized protests in California, Maryland and Michigan. In one Texas suburb, three teenagers led hundreds of people in a march, and they say they aren’t done organizing. —The New York Times, June 23, 2020

My sisters and brothers,
I declare to you that we
have practiced concealed
carry for too long. The
time to practice open
carry has arrived.

Henceforth, let us openly
carry our right to speak
freely, our right to assemble
peaceably, and our right to
petition the government for
a redress of grievances.

A suggestion: this time,
when our grievances seem
to have been resolved, let’s
not conceal our rights of speech,
assembly, and petition again.

Not ever. Never.

MEN IN BLACK

by Michael L. Ruffin

BREAKING NEWS: Georgia police on Thursday arrested a white father and son and charged them with murder in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man whose death in February has recently attracted widespread outrage. Much of that anger has been focused on the fact that no charges had been brought against the father and son, Gregory and Travis McMichael, ages 64 and 34. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that both men had been taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault in addition to murder. Travis fired the shots that killed Mr. Arbery, the state police agency said in a statement. —The New York Times, May 7, 2020, 8:26 p.m. ET

PANDEMIC GOOD FRIDAY IN AMERICA

by Michael L. Ruffin

“I’m a Doctor at the ‘Epicenter of the Epicenter.’ Let’s not forget the social failures that allowed Covid-19 to overwhelm neighborhoods like Elmhurst in Queens.” —Ben McVane, The New York Times, April 5, 2020. Dr. McVane (pictured above) specializes in emergency medicine.

When this
is all over,
and we have
crucified
so many of
our doctors,
nurses, and
other medical
professionals,
will they say,
“Forgive them,
for they didn’t
know what they
were doing?”

Should they?

Didn’t we?

THE GIVING TREE DRAWS THE LINE

by Michael L. Ruffin

The Tree had
grown old.

The Boy had
grown wealthy
and powerful.

“What’s wrong, Boy?”
the Tree asked.

“The COVID-19 crisis,”
the Boy answered.

"How can I help?”
the Tree asked.

 “You can die so
the stock market
can live,”
the Boy answered.

“You can kiss my roots,”
the Tree said to the Boy.

AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION

by Michael L. Ruffin

Out of an abundance of caution,
we are washing our hands
seventy-six times a day.

Out of an abundance of caution,
we are avoiding large
gatherings of people.

Out of an abundance of caution,
we are trying not
to touch anybody.

Out of an abundance of caution,
we are disinfecting
everything in sight.

Out of an abundance of caution,
we are sneezing and coughing
into our sleeves.

Oh, and out of an abundance of caution,
we will henceforth vote for only
science-affirming, rationally-thinking,
forward-looking, plan-making,
crisis-anticipating, confidence-inspiring
candidates for any and every office.

T***P HEARS ABOUT INTELLIGENCE OFFICIALS TELLING CONGRESS THE TRUTH ABOUT RUSSIAN MEDDLING IN THE 2020 ELECTION

by Michael L. Ruffin

1969 or so.
Wednesday night prayer meeting.
Small rural Baptist church.
Guest preacher.
My deacon father
on the front row,
as always.

Guest preacher.
Not very good.
Losing us.
Tries to get us back
with attempt at humor.
Points at my father:
“Somebody wake up
that sleeping deacon.”

After the service,
my father lets
the preacher have it:
“Don’t you ever embarrass me
in front of these people again!”

In the car on the way
home, my mother says,
“Champ, what got into you?”

He replies,
“I was asleep.”
