THE EXORCIST

by Frank Conahan

The Archbishop of
Washington DC removed
The senior priest who

Has been the diocesan
Exorcist for the
Last nearly twenty years

After the latter
Said that Unidentified
Flying Objects were

Demons. Actually, one would
Think that Monsignor
Rossetti
would be in a

Good position to
Make such an assessment,
Although it is the

Twenty first century and
There are no such things
Actually as UFOs.

Dr. Frank Conahan lives in reclusive retirement outside of Baltimore, Maryland. He follows current events with trepidation and copes by writing verse. He has recently published poems with "Bards of Maryland." His collection Nothing Is Coming was published in April.

THEY WALK AMONG US

by Zumwalt

The White House's new site about 'aliens' has nothing to do with UFOs. —NPR, June 3, 2026

It's a historical fact:
the indigenous American
during the colonial invasion
couldn't leverage AI to code html,
didn't have an alien tip line,
never created Alien and Sedition Acts,
didn't irresponsibly fabricate statistics,
didn't automate tribal dehumanization.

No, these early Americans
didn't call others "It"
as in "we will take care of 'it'
and return it to 'its' place of origin."

"Origin," a well-chosen word:
like the origin of infection,
the origin of contamination,
the origin of outrage.

The new settlers have the newest tools
to influence a receptive audience:
memes to maximize malice,
maps to marshal marginalization,
media to market malignity.

The means to turn others in—
besides a group to hate,
another group to join,
and providing perpetual propaganda—
there must be a way to inform,
conveniently, anonymously,
one that instills a sense of pride
for an act of persecution:
the bright red button at the White House website.

Zumwalt's poetry feeds on alienation, shifting reality, and forced adaptation. Zumwalt, a proud repeat contributor to The New Verse News, has recently been published in Light.

MUSEUM OF CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

by Kenneth Arthur

AI-generated graphic by NightCafé for The New Verse News.

When we paid the entrance fee
the sign promised “a glimpse
into the stable genius of our future”
but when the tour guide
led us into a room
dreary, dark and a little damp,
brushed away giant cobwebs,
expounded upon the macabre exhibit,
Kitty For Dinner in water colors,
I had my doubts.
When we were issued
rubber gloves
raincoats
knee-high boots
led deep down into the building’s bowels
I knew we’d been swindled.
As tour progressed through gallery
of beautiful asses and large breasts
with interactive display
a soft mewl crept into awareness.
Before I could discover its source
we were whisked away
to view the prison full of Mexicans,
then film of disabled with full laugh track
I wanted to cry
masked people shooting up disinfectant,
forest rangers raking leaves
I wanted to cackle
golden throne atop a hill of green land,
orange statue straddling a canal
I wanted to scream
then that sound again, a whimpering,
young boy crying
chained to the wall
just beyond his reach a door and sign:
Now leaving Trump’s brain.
Sorry, Donny. I have to save myself.
I ran for the exit.

MY CAT AND I HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT TALKING WITH WHALES

by Matthew King

So now, I tell my cat, we talk with whales.
He yawns in pointed answer: it’s beneath
his dignity to suffer such tall tales.
His rough tongue flashes out across his teeth.
I ask him, well, should we use cats instead
to study alien communication?
Look, he says, you say what’s in my head
without the need for my participation.
You’re doing it right now! I haven’t said
a word, it’s all you, even this frustration!
Good luck, whales and Martians! Me, I’m fed
up with one-sided human conversation.
Oh, I tease him, don’t trust my translation?
Wait until you hear me speak cetacean.

Author's note: Some scientists believe they have successfully conducted a conversation with a humpback whale, and that this is good practice for communicating with aliens. My cat is skeptical.

Matthew King used to teach philosophy at York University in Toronto, Canada; he now lives in what Al Purdy called "the country north of Belleville" where he tries to grow things, counts birds, takes pictures of flowers with bugs on them, and walks a rope bridge between the neighbouring mountaintops of philosophy and poetry. BLIZZARD OF OZ ‘23

by Scott C. Kaestner

Frostbitten existential mood swings
my fingers can’t feel my toes
numb
        frozen
try to twist, try to wiggle free
nothing. My mind is a mine field
explosive blue diamond
in snow drift icicle sky
and damn it gets so cold
when an angry sun scorches
everything in sight. The world is
upside down, reason I know
do you hear the shit coming out
of peoples mouths? The aliens
no doubt are bored with us and
have moved onto planets with
                intelligent
                                 life
something religion and politics
and 24 hour news cycles
eliminated from Earth
quite some
         time
                ago
so here I am, here we are
freezer burnt waiting for the end
or a new beginning or at least
some warm socks to apocalypse in.

Scott C. Kaestner is a Los Angeles poet, writer, dad, husband, and an invisible man in plain sight. Google “Scott Kaestner Poetry” to peruse his musings and maybe even buy a book.

IN SEARCH OF ALIEN CIVILISATIONS

by Martha Landman

According to a new study in The Astrophysical Journal, scientists at the University of Nottingham estimate that there is a minimum of 36 communicating intelligent alien civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. —CBS News, June 18, 2020

sitting on the veranda the other night
enjoying a hashish pipe
I got dreamy
and disappeared into the Milky Way
passing Venus and Mars
I didn’t stop this time
because they had a domestic quarrel   again
                                      palm to palm
my sky map forged me ahead      to Orion
who offered beer and cigarettes, chips and cheese
Conselice was staying the night
his nephew E.T. played with his Rubik’s Cube
trying to solve the Drake equation
we sat on a mega rock   Orion and I had a long chat
                                           between wake and sleep
about alien galaxies meandering around
when his laser phone detonated three loud shrills
it was Peter Backus wanting us to know
“we live in a very quiet neighbourhood”
Orion’s eyes were large      I tried to pacify him
quoting Rumi: “Love is the breath of the cosmos”
he took out his horoscope and zoomed in
                                      on other galaxies
stars were born as we looked at them
alien galaxies were signed in different languages
in front of No 23 a sign on a large wooden gate
said in Hebrew:  תישאר בחוץ לעזאזל – “stay the heck out” -
this is holy land      we assumed
         we needed an exit strategy
we weren’t going to make a covenant with hypocrisy
or with gypsies on walking sticks    their blood green
so we flowed down lava tubes through pigeon holes
                                into a glorious dystopia

THE RED MAN WITH CLOSED EYES

by Tanmoy Das Lala

You call them rapists, murderers, criminals, mock
The silence of a grieving mother, yet
The people in the room break into a riot of applause;
Many more, behind the protection of a television screen
Do the same –bow their heads in silent nods, in case
Motion spills into the roving eyes of ideological avenge.
It makes me cringe, makes me afraid, feel
Oddly defeated – at this vicious name-calling
Of the ‘un-Americans’; toxic, this culture of exclusion.

I am an immigrant of color, and gay,
Who came to this hip of land for a better life, to pursue
A world of dreams; ousted by the jurisdiction
Of divisive laws upheld by my home country –reinstated
To chain same-sex lovers, like myself. It is this narrative
Of dislocation that is my common history with your forefathers,
Who did the same, who wobbled
On the nape of cultural dichotomies, to build for you
A better life. Our uprooting, the confusion of fleet,
Reconstructions of life’s jagged shards, is not
Your lived experience – and I would never wish it upon you,
Having known the shame behind the name-calling,
Feeling, often, like an engorged specimen under a microscope.

Your pathological view of the illegals, the aliens, I have come to realize,
Is only a small twig of a much bigger tree,
Rooted deeply in your heart, this phobia of the other; this issue
Of legality, a timid straw behind your slanted vision
Of a White America.

Do you forget, Red Man, how many fingers of aliens
Have built the legs of your empire?

Do you realize, Red Man, that law is expensive and
Entire villages of fugitives would’ve bled
Under the hack of death, had they not made the breathless escape
To the hopeful shores of this country?

Look beyond this universe of fear you have constructed,
And notice –that many of us are here to help, to settle
In peace, and love the pillars of a fresh vista of freedom.
Many of us would fight and fight and fight
For a Nation that isn’t ours, because this Nation gives us hope,
Much more than our own. If you lift the veil
Of constant suspicion, undo the latches barring our dreams, remove
The talons biting into our collective strength, you will
See, a majority of us, united before the same flag,
Committed to the cause, not different from yours,
Of together, building an even greater Nation. I wish you would see,
For once, this alternate reality, beyond
The hollow of your eyes, shuttered so closely tight –
That anything in the living darkness, to you,
Is an all-consuming threat, a wrench, a narrative of greed.

SWAGGER

by Herb Kauderer

not understanding
that presentation
is all about posture

the presidential hopeful
offends the interstellar alien
with a proffered hand

his campaign ends painfully,
his promise of war fulfilled

Herb Kauderer is an associate professor of English at Hilbert College, and the author of over a thousand published poems, including ten books.

OLD GLORY

by Thom Young

we're not alone
there are aliens
with moon bases and ancient pyramids
in a vacuum
because that's what the universe
is
no chance and no wind.
but you saw Old Glory
waving
as
 Neil danced
his small steps for man
while
the women never got mentioned
again.
there's a chance they're lying
to us
but I wonder what
comes on channel 5
tonight?

Thom Young is a writer from Texas. His work has been in The Commonline Journal, 3am magazine, Word Riot, 48th Street Press, and many other places. A 2008 Million Writers Award nominee for his story "Perico".
