NO KINGS DAY

by Ron Shapiro

What if signs of discontent,
Anger, frustration and hatred
Line every nook-and-cranny
Of the amerikan landscape
On this national day of protest?

What if everyone set down
Their phones, turned off
The hypnotic hum buzzing
In their ears, feeding them
What they want to hear rather
Than what they need to hear?
This morning I wonder
What I can do today?
How can I manifest
The sadness of witnessing
Amerika’s descent into darkness?

While bombs drop on buildings
And streets in the Middle East,
Bombs of deception and corruption
Drop daily, one after another,
Boom
boom
boom
into the fragile fabric of democracy.

Collateral damage of such weapons
Invite suffering, disease and division
Mocking ideas of “liberty and justice
For all.” In these times, words empty
Themselves of meaning replaced
With ignorance and exceptionalism
Along with a foundation of fear.

On this day, which should be everyday,
People of all ages who resist the dumbing
Down of amerika, the purging of skin
Color, gender diversity, critical thinking,
And the failure of elected officials to
Follow their conscience instead of money
And power, take to the streets. Not carrying
Weapons that kill but weapons of kindness,
Compassion, love, and hope that children
And grandchildren will grow up into
A world that favors peace not destruction.

So I’ll head out to add my voice
To those who gather with intention.
We will not succumb to a government
Whose lies, carelessness and stupidity
Try to steal the breath from our lungs.
On this day we will be heard.
Our voices will not be silenced.

THIS POEM ISN'T GOING TO SOLVE THE MIDDLE EAST PEACE CRISIS

by Shannon Frost Greenstein

Death and suffering in Gaza. Cartoon by Marilena Nardi.

I believe in a Free Palestine.

Wait, hold on… that wasn’t how I wanted to start at all.

This poem isn’t going to solve the Middle East peace crisis.

Well, that’s hardly any better, but what I’m really trying to say is,

I love my Jewish husband.

I love my sweet, supportive, circumcised Jewish husband,

and I love his family,

and I love their families,

all of whom accepted a shiksa who adores Christmas

right into their homes; right into their tribe.

But I believe in a Free Palestine.

And I am the first to acknowledge that I know absolutely nothing

about the epigenetic trauma of being Jewish;

after all, my people have always tended to do more of the oppressing.

I cannot speak to the experience of a Holocaust

or to the damage that comes from being hated and hunted

for 3,000 years in a row.

But I believe in a Free Palestine.

So when my husband and I sit down

to discuss Gaza and the Nova Festival and all of the starving babies—

the horror and the suffering and all of the fear—we do not always see eye to eye.

And if we have issues discussing human rights and geopolitics and the existence of war crimes,

you can just imagine how family dinners at my in-laws’ get.

I am a mother and a pacifist, at the end of the day,

with too much empathy

and an unfinished Ph.D. regarding the philosophical nature of ethics;

I like it best when everyone just gets along.

But I also believe in a Free Palestine

while simultaneously attempting to respect my Jewish husband’s heritage

and that is apparently an untenable position in which to be.

This poem isn’t going to solve the Middle East peace crisis.

But maybe it will alleviate some tension in my marriage.

STREAK-BACKED ORIOLE

by David Chorlton

A cloudy desert day. The city smiles.
Slow rain falling. Circles of light on the pond.
The same sad news
                             drop by drop
and no umbrella for protection
against reports from far away.
It’s numbers day
by smoking day with innocence
as no defence, a conflict over who belongs
and who doesn’t. It’s different
with birds,
              the ones who stray
out of their range are most sought after
like the Streak-backed Orioles
come north to the water reclamation park.
They don’t need papers.
No visas. Just an orange
cut in half
              for easy feeding. Welcome
bright birds. No borders in the air.
The newscast doesn’t reach
to where they are. They leave a question
hanging:
           are there orioles
in the Middle East? Has beauty ever been
a broker between the sides
of an old argument? One side does this, the other
does that.
They keep doing what they know
to do. Every answer comes
in kind. There must be a field guide
for cruelty. It must be disguised
as a holy book.

David Chorlton lives in Phoenix and takes note of the local wildlife. He had a book out early this year called The Flying Desert in which many of the birds he sees even within the city limits are represented in poems and his watercolor paintings.

WAR, BY ALL MEANS

by Indran Amirthanayagam

War. To end all wars. War. To squash, squeeze,

stamp out flea, bug, virus, hate-filled cur. War.

To avenge children, women, men, mowed

down by cars, in homes, gardens, streets.

War. Angels of doom, of death, thousands

of flares splashing the night sky, shot down,

blown up, debris falling aimlessly, thousand

injured, two thousand dead and counting. War.

Invasion. Unprovoked. Stoked. Warships

and aircraft carriers roaring towards the middle

of the Middle East, with sheikhs and princes,

and restless armies, drumming again, to defend,

to protect the right to exist? To live unbombed?

By a temple unbombed? School unbombed?

Agricultural cooperative, unbombed? War.

Peace. Yes bring the 'niks into the chat. Unify

the world before the horror and awe. Get

laws passed that will legalize the extra-

territorial execution. War. Times of War.

Times of throwing civic bones to dogs.

Dogs of war. Howling, yapping dogs

of war. Poor canines we steal for metaphors.

Metaphor. Cadence, Rhyme. Unreason:

War. Temporary Solution:War.

FALLEN HERO QUILTS

by Alan Catlin

Each square represents
another life lost in

middle eastern war zone—
eight in the series
shown here in early June

Some panels are hand
sewn, artful, professional,
with pictures, testimonials

from loved ones

Others are hand written
scrolled with mistakes

but the feeling of loss
and emotion is clear

Next year more panels
will be sewn

another quilt
assembled

Maybe two

THE VIEW FROM SAMARIA

by Matt Quinn

On the top of the photo it says:
Would you help Jesus up?
and beneath the fallen Nazerene:
TYPE ‘YES’

and it looks like 107,000 people
have done just that,
and I think:
well, yes,

now that you know who he is,
but take away that cross
and the crown of thorns
and all you’ve got

is some middle-eastern looking guy
with a head wound
except this one
looks rather like

a white man
with a tan,
but let’s pretend.
He could very easily be

a terrorist
or a refugee,
or more likely
an economic migrant

faking it:
those wounds on his head
are only scratches after all

and probably self-inflicted.

And besides
he doesn't look at all
like a Christian.
Would you help him up?

Type 'yes'.

Matt Quinn lives in Brighton, England and hopes to one day have a sufficiently impressive list of poetry publications to justify a bio.

KERRY ON, JOHN

by Charles Frederickson & Saknarin Chinayote

Prince Valiant epic comic adventure
Positive mindset wading into troubled
Waters flotsam debris garbage patch
Pelagic plastics chemical sludge pollution

Pitch Black Sea bullyrag revenge
Hearts of Darkness octopodal depths
Derelict abandoned shipwreck cast overboard
No hope of being reclaimed

Slivered driftwood floating turd extremists
Inbred superiority complex insular chutzpah
Thug mentality spreading putrid humanure
Compromise declared a dirty word

History isn’t made by cynics
But by brave-hearted visionary dreamers
Unafraid to end Zionist occupation
Wheeler-dealers spinning Vegas odds roulette

Peaceful coexistence only viable alternative
Stubbornly ignoring Uncle Sam cries
For help illegal settlements universally
Condemned drowning in leaky pool

MOVING THE QUEEN

by Tricia Knoll

All she wanted when she fled up
north was to keep her child and man --
she hummed her song all along.
All she wanted from mother’s day
was for her son and another
mother’s boy let each other live.

All she wanted from her locked chain
on the White House fence was to vote
for a man for President.
All she wanted from a wheelchair
rolling her body to the voter’s booth
was a death with dignity.

All she wants running for office
is to oust the jerks who tell her
to do more with less and love it.
All she wants from her website
is for Muslim and Jewish women
to read each other’s poetry.

All she wants from a pink t-shirt
is to walk with womenfolk
who celebrate survival.
All she wants from bumper stickers
is for neighbors to know
she yearns to marry Isabelle.

All she wants to find online
is work that lets her feed her twins
more than macaroni and cheese.
All I want from holding the queen
is to slide her fleet-foot fury
to checkmate the cross-head king.

Tricia Knoll is a Portland, Oregon poet. She never burned a bra but she walked in a Yale graduation in 1970 without one.

HUBBLY-BUBBLY HOOKAH IMPLAUSIBLE PIPE DREAMS

Poem by Charles Frederickson
Graphic by Saknarin Chinayote

Spring of 2013 sprang sprung
Wireless Slinky descending into oblivion
Faithful almost pregnant hopes misplaced
Beastly encounters of uncivilized kind

Obama venturing into wildcat cage
Spotted tigers changing starry stripes
Circus Minimus centrist ring distractions
Mane pride flaming hope singed

Caught between chipped stonewall boulders
Both sides blame-gaming each other
Rising tide engulfing global condemnation
Criticizing unsettled borderline territorial domination

Tripped objectives uncivil Syrian wars
Holding back bullyrag Iran strike
Iron dome rocket-interceptor defensive offence
Pushing tug of peace patience

Sending crudible messages massaging superegos
U.S. committed to Israel ’s survival
While reconciling tainted blood-brother doubts
Jocks supporting secular democratic ideals

Cocoon swayed by geopolitical realities
Giant silkworm emerging from pupa
Caterpillars molting Machiavellian expectation skins
Luna moths acknowledging legitimate fears
