BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...

by Darcy Grabenstein

They plastered their hate-filled propaganda
on walls, on posts, anywhere, everywhere
They started with boycotts of businesses
They isolated us, segregated in ghettos
They labeled us with yellow patches
They pilfered property, possessions
They ruthlessly humiliated us
They herded us like cattle
to concentration camps
Working us mercilessly
through illness, hunger
The cruelly conducted
medical experiments
They implemented
the ”Final Solution”
Until we could not
gasp for breath.
They attempt coups at the Capitol
and across the pond in Germany

They slaughter innocents
in nightclubs
synagogues
mosques
churches

They ban books
they ban choices
they ban love

They’re just warming up.

And that chills me to my bones.

STATE OF EMERGENCY

by Rémy Dambron

Traffic has ground to a halt at the busiest border crossing in North America, as Canadian truckers and others angry with vaccine mandates spread their protest beyond Ottawa. Trucks started blocking the Ambassador Bridge linking the cities of Detroit and Windsor late on Monday, closing down traffic in both directions. On Tuesday, entry to Canada remained blocked while US-bound traffic slowed to a crawl. Each day, 8,000 trucks normally cross the bridge, which handles about 27% of trade between Canada and the US. Protesters also targeted another major border crossing in Coutts, Alberta. Canada’s capital city remained blockaded by hundreds of vehicles from the “freedom convoy” while protest organizers called for a meeting with all federal political leaders – except the prime minister, Justin Trudeau – to find a “peaceful resolution” to the crisis. —The Guardian, February 9, 2022. 5G and QAnon: how conspiracy theorists steered Canada’s anti-vaccine trucker protest. Ottawa’s occupation was a result of unrivaled coordination between anti-vax and anti-government organizations: Thousands of demonstrators have successfully occupied Canada’s frigid capital for days, and say they plan on staying as long as it takes to thwart the country’s vaccine requirements. The brazen occupation of Ottawa came as a result of unprecedented coordination between various anti-vaccine and anti-government organizations and activists, and has been seized on by similar groups around the world. It may herald the revenge of the anti-vaxxers. —The Guardian, February 8, 2022

the clan of anti-vaxxers grows deep
its organizers harvesting the internet in search of troops to spawn

crowd sourcing sites swarming
bloated with donations

luring proponents from the fringe
to strengthen their tribe
in protest of medicine
masks
safety
measures
rules
…science?

in bad faith
foreign influencers
direct funds to float false claims
their target audience erecting camps
to stake their domain

demanding more than to be heard
demanding more
or less

stockpiling fuel for warmth
as they willfully inhabit
the bitter cold streets in the name of

freedom

the same streets they insisted
could never be
home for the homeless

last week they harassed
soup kitchens
ordering volunteers to fuel them
with meals intended to feed
the reluctantly unsheltered
and vulnerable

this week they taunt police
issuing threats they once denounced

instigating confrontations they once decried

intimidating countrymen they once sought to protect

relieving themselves on local lawns defacing public squares
promoting disdain
division

and next week what then?

confederate flags will continue
soaring high above their lorries
fiercely flaunting symbols of hatred

not symbolic of true democracies
not emblematic of our liberties
not representative of we the people

but exhibitive of the perilous tears
shredding our social fabric

Author’s Note: We must never lose our ability to distinguish between peaceful protest and civil disturbance. Where the former is an indispensable component of a successful government, the latter is all too often one of its greatest threats.

WINTRY MIX

by Tricia Knoll

As a forecast this seems like calling for mayhem
until the front moves in and the silence of snow
licks every branch and sticks to each twig’s gesture.

The goldfinch and nuthatches retreat from the feeder
to unseen hideouts. The dogs yawn, and I succumb
to a sleepiness at odds with the morning news

of those who call for civil war, the skyrockets
of corona deaths, projections of costs in trust
and cash. The silence of falling snow deepens

inch by inch above the ice slick the rain gave
first. Slow gather and the flurry of politicians
with papers and proof seeking. Such sad news

in accumulations inch by inch by inch.

Tricia Knoll is living out the series of wintry mixes in Vermont where the forecast calls of windchills of -20 in the next few days. Her new chapbook Let's Hear It For The Horses is available February 1, and the horses outside down the road during the day  are all wearing heavy blankets now.

CONSPIRACY THEORETICAL WITCH HUNTS

by Richard Hacken

Hillary, it has been shown, created ISIS.
Everything we know shows how that terror crisis
Came from Clinton’s wicked wish to sacrifice us.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

In Libya she only made things worse, because she
Purposefully waited to send in the posse
At the embassy when needed in Benghazi.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Email servers were her tools of choice for treason
As she lured and let the spies of the Chinese in,
Laughing as she lied about her sordid reason.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Shocking to our sensibilities as humans,
Hillary dropped bombs less ethical than Truman’s,
Pimping out her husband to young female students.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Hillary remains untouched by House committees
Searching hard to bring her down by her Achilles,
While bribes she paid stack up in banks in offshore cities.
                        It’s not a conspiracy theory
                        If it happened (really)!

Richard Hacken enjoys trochaic political satire.  While slightly amused by conspiracy theories and witch hunts, he hates to see them linked to each other.

THE CRISIS 2013

by George Held

Safe in gerrymandered districts
House Tea Partiers vie
To end the democratic process
Through calumny and lies.

Hateful of our President
And much in love with Cruz
Tea partiers set new precedent
For filibustered schmooze.

Ask not what to do for country
But just for Red State views –
Pro-gun, pro-life, and anti-tax
And poor and migrant crews.

Safe in gerrymandered districts
Untouched by Reason
And wed to right-wing cliques
Tea Partiers foment treason

And call it Constitutional;
While liberals quake and quail
And cry, “Delusional!”
The nation lies derailed.
