THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CHURCH OF [NAME WITHHELD ON ADVICE OF COUNSEL]

by Matthew E. Henry (MEH)

from Paul—a prisoner to the gospel of God—to all those

across the Eastern Ocean who have named themselves

after Christ, consider themselves His most holy people.

doubtless you have heard of the bonds of our brother,

Pastor Daniel Fuentes Espinal who, born in Honduras,

heeded God’s call to minster among you in Maryland

for over a decade. heard how he was stalked and taken

into the unholy hands of masked men on the road between

Lowes’ and McDonald’s. was shackled into the belly

of their beast, but preached the fruits of repentance—his hope

of their finding forgiveness in Jesus—to his captors

from his car to the cell they anonymously threw him in.

when such reached my ear, my spirit was greatly troubled,

but I took comfort assured that you—his siblings in Christ—

were firmly knit in condemning such actions, tied in the unity

of securing his release from imprisonments worse than mine.

that no disagreements could cut the knot of our fellowship.

I was astonished to hear some among you have raised your voice

against our brother on social media, confident in the baffling belief

our refugee Savior—who fled Judea for Egypt—would stand

within the invisible lines you’ve drawn about both His kingdoms.

given all we hold holy, how in the Hell—you so vehemently

sentence others to—have you allowed Phillip Doug to say

our brother “is not a victim if he is in our country illegally”? or

tolerate Todd James—a supposed minister of the Grace

of God—claims that “Christians who have illegal paperwork

are getting sent back to their country so they can preach the gospel

and lay their life down like the apostles did”? Miller Tonee rejoices

that people in his congregation are self-deporting. Herb Jimzel—

whose bio proclaims he spreads God's love to orphans, the poor,

and to those with no hope—says his family came here legally—

in all caps, with three exclamation points—sees no contradiction

between our brother’s treatment and “the word of God.” Shawn Dale

says pastor Espinal should be glad he wasn’t shot.

though I once warned the Philippians to beware the devious bitches

in their midst and wished botched circumcisions to scar my detractors

in Galatia, I’m uncharacteristically at a loss for words to address

those reprobate minds who forget our brother’s skin looks more like

our shared Savior’s than what they feign. fiery indignation scalds

my tongue to near-silence least I scandalize those of you who allow

such slander to continue.

hear the word of the LORD, set your house in order. God is faithful—

He will see to His servant, but will also remember and repay all you

have and not done, especially to those within the household of faith.

THE AMERICAN GOSPEL (2020 EDITION)

by Avalon Felice Lee

In the beginning…
January judgment
Red hat, white lies
"The flu is worse!" he scorns
as his gavel cudgels China, the blue-faced, the blue-lunged
The pen of law
holds the ink for healthcare blueprints.
The dough in his fist
for swab tests; for the people.

February denial
Nailed wrists, or tied hands?
Our savior, or an excuse?
Americans,
             repent!
                          Beware of
                                       fake news
                                                    sham gold
                                                                 idols—
Nothing to worry about! Nothing at all!
Come to the altar, worship whoever’s crowned
The winged choir guard the American garden
from Wuhan fiends
And so, nib unscathed
Pockets heavy

The Gospel
Good thing he cares for his shares
The yeast for His bread
unrisen, decayed
So, He Marches forward
And trumpets that “the numbers are good” as is
apparently
contrarily

But April showers make faith dour.
Just in case, behind Jericho bricks
He breaks bread
for swab tests; for His people
crumbs

Oh, you sinner
Cast doubt from your mind!
May you rejoice!
The Savior saves His people!
Good thing he cares for his shares.

Revelation
Though idols dine in violet silkone day
the synthetic dye will blanch
Dress in your Sunday best, filter masks
Earth will soon steal the recipe for
manna
Sacrifice pedestrian beer
for communion wine, Purell
June bugs, heathens, see the sunup
The world ends not with a virus!
(But by the folly of man.)

INFIRMITY

by Rick Mullin
After the Mueller Report by Barry Blitt at The New Yorker

The faithless Democrat turns very fast
on a purported savior when that savior
doesn’t let him have his way. The last
two days bring out his worst behavior.
Now the hope of a purported dossier
is dashed, the clumsy meeting in the tower
proves another harrowing non-starter.
The Democrat hangs back at happy hour,
pining for the days of Jimmy Carter
before the Gipper took his ball away.
“Perhaps that special counsel was a ruse!”
He’ll air that out on social media.
His reverence for a savior’s fast and loose,
unlike that of the MAGA ascaridia
whose savior lives to loathe another day.

Rick Mullin's newest poetry collection is Lullaby and Wheel.

T***P'S MAGNIFICAT

by Jerry W. Ward, Jr.

Saint Putin by aegragru at DeviantArt

in praise of Putin the Red Dragon

My heart does magnify your wind
And my head rejoices in you my savior.
For you have annotated the low esteem
of your apostle; for, it is great,
from henceforth all hysteria
will call me blasted.
For you who are haughty
have done to me naughty things;
and ghostly is your name.
And your mendacity resides in them
who hear you from her story to history.
You have sown despair
with your hands; you have
scattered hubris
in the imagery of my soul.
You have desecrated the mighty
in their seats and rescued me from prevarication.
You have brained the rich
with good things; and the hungry,
you have sent to the garbage pails.
You have exalted me, your most obedient
serf, in remembrance of your mercy;
as you preached to my father,
Judas in the chariot, and to my spawn forever.

CLOAKED IN CLOUDS

by Meryl Baer

Washington Post, May 17, 2017

The Man seduced the people,
Spilling warped words of wisdom.
The crowd kowtowed to their savior.
They yelled, they screamed
They jumped for joy.
The Man came forth to save them
Roaring Admire me! Adore me!
Love me evermore.
Crushing competence and candor,
The Man proclaims his Word.
The people say:
The Man understands our woes.
He speaks what's really in our hearts
Of hatred, fear and foes.

Meanwhile:
Snakes slither,
Squinting in the light,
Spreading venom.
They grab they stifle
The other, the unfamiliar, the foreign,
The ones abhorring The Man.

I wait, hope, anticipate one morning when
Clouds scatter and
Seeds sprout
Strangling those gnarly, nasty rascals
Unfurling hate and fear.

THE MAN WHO WANTED IT TOO MUCH

by David Spicer

Mitt Romney - The King of Bain

From the age of five the man’s ambition was to be President of the most powerful nation on earth. This desire burned so intensely he acquired a swarthy, handsome demeanor that attracted beautiful women. He chose the loveliest and they worked together to fulfill his dream. He graduated from the top business school and felt that since government was the biggest business, he was uniquely qualified. His successes mounted and his family of five sons thrived. He craved leadership like a man desperate in a desert. He sweated desire and ambition. When he mounted his campaign for President after serving as savior of the Olympics and governor of a small state, the people did not trust him. They called him a liar and a fraud. His party renounced him and then slowly accepted him without passion. His opponent grinned and charmed people, his eloquent intellect a coin that dazzled. One pundit branded the man whose lifelong ambition dangled within reach a clumsy buffoon who wanted it too much. Voters agreed. On election day they chose the stunning intellectual by the slimmest margin, and the handsome businessman flew into the desert and disappeared.

Author of one collection, Everybody Has a Story, four chapbooks, and six unpublished poetry manuscripts, David Spicer has previously published in The New Verse News and also has work in Alcatraz, Nitty Gritty, Aura, Brown God, Hinchas de Poesia, Crack the Spine, Dirtflask, Spudgun, Mad Rush, Used Furniture Review, Fur-Lined Ghettos, Spudgun, Bop Dead City, The American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, Resurgo, and elsewhere.
