REMINDERS

by Phyllis Wax

Israeli settlers beat a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank, stripped him naked, tied his arms and legs and then zip-tied his penis, he, his family members and another witness said on Wednesday. “I thought I was going to die,” the man, Suhaib Abualkebash (above), a 29-year-old shepherd, told The New York Times. “I thought this was the end.” Photo by Afif Amireh.

Even as ghosts their bones
are visible: ribs, backbones,
sticks of arms and legs.

But the occupiers in the West Bank,
the army in Gaza,
do not see the ghosts
of their ancestors,
do not hear their rattling bones
or their ghostly admonishments
not to duplicate the cruelty done to them,
seem deaf to the idea that never again
means not to anyone.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

by Lisa Seidenberg

Woman found living in Family Fare sign in Midland, Michigan for almost a year.

It had a roof and a door

space for a laptop and clothes

electric kettle, plant and more

in her improvised home

above the big box store.

warmed on chill Michigan nights

wrapped in rays of a red neon sign

while unseeing shoppers passed below

What thoughts crossed her mind

as she lay perched behind the sign;

Is it a crime to be homeless in America?

settlers came to this land

with only their hands

and some tools and their wits

making up the rules of wrong

and right as survival

is the primal law

not simply a need for shelter

led her to this penthouse nest.

living for a year like a stealthy mountaineer

scaling the crest of Family Fare.

a temporary home.

a summit of her own.

I AM GAZA

by Ralph Dranow
Poster (via Flickr) created by Michael Thompson for a Gaza Freedom March… in 2010!

I am a three-year-old Palestinian boy,
shattered body a sorrowful song
sung by an Israeli bomb.

I am an 18-year-old Israeli soldier,
the stench of death seeping into my nostrils,
invading my whole being.

I am a Palestinian mother, my heart weeping,
my six-year-old daughter fainting from hunger,
my infant son fading fast.

I am Benjamin Netanyahu,
clinging to the life raft of power
in a turbulent sea.

I am a horrified Jewish-American,
the thread of connection sewn into my cells,
demanding an end to the killing.

I am an Israeli settler in the West Bank,
wishing the Palestinians, like noxious insects,
would just go away.

I am an evangelical Christian,
eager for Hamas to be demolished,
so that the Kingdom of Christ can manifest in Israel.

I am a Hamas soldier,
enclosed inside the righteous armor of my cause,
prepared to kill and die for the liberation of Palestine.

I am an Israeli peace activist,
murdered by Hamas on October 7th,
my body destroyed, my spirit refusing to die.

WASHINGTON AND THE REDSKINS

by James Penha

Fleeing European horrors,
God's chosen landed at a great rock
on which they built their havens,
their temples, and their theocracies
and squatted the nomadic tribes
ignorant of salvation and so damned
(if human enough to have life
after life at all). Settlers made
manifest their destiny
to exploit, expropriate,
disease, enslave,
blanket, and reserve the savages.
And when the natives resisted
eternal occupation, the settlers,
republicans by then and democrats,
made war and baubles
of redskins.

And now Washington mouths
itself agape in the mirror of the middle east.

JUSTICE IS REVENGE

by Charles Frederickson

Mohamed Abu Khdeir, the Palestinian teenager who was kidnapped and murdered on Wednesday in a suspected revenge killing by Israeli extremists, was burned alive after suffering a head injury, the Palestinian attorney general has claimed. --The Guardian, Jul. 5, 2014
Beaten Palestinian youth is U.S. citizen, cousin of murdered kidnap victim. Video shows the boy being beaten by three policemen; U.S. State Department calls for a 'credible investigation and full accountability for any excessive use of force.' State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki named the youth as Tariq Khdeir, 15. He was a cousin of Muhammed Abu Khdeir, a 16-year-old Palestinian whose burned body was found Wednesday in the Jerusalem Forest. Khdeir was visited by a U.S. consulate official, the statement said. --Nir Hasson and Haaretz, Jul. 6, 2014
A group of Israelis was arrested in what one official described as a revenge killing. Pledging that the perpetrators would “face the full weight of the law,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “We do not differentiate between terrorists.” --NY Times, July 6, 2014

Taught baseless Avarice Animosity Animus
3 R’s: Revenge Retaliation Retribution
Rather than Respectful Reasonable Restraint
Tender mercy compassionate kindness love

Forced abduction burning humiliating torture
Barbaric heinous murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir
Innocent young Jerusalem victim warped
Mindset degrading extrajudicial avenging vigilantes

Hate crimes against humanity carried
Out by right-wing settler extremists
a.k.a. “price tag” repayments 400+
Conducted in 2013 largely un-prosecuted

Black eye for jaundiced eye
Makes myopic whole world blind
Don’t repay evil for evil
Abscessed tooth for infected truth

Tit-for-tat violence almost everyday occurrence
Wronged Muslim families brutalized villages
Feeling wrath of cruel power-mongers
Who’ll eventually face own karma

The best revenge is proving
Your can do/will do determination accomplishing
What naysayers declare you can’t
Doing it in superior manner
