WHAT THE LIVING HAVE SEEN

by Lynne Rappaport

Donate here.

How many days has it been now, since 10/7,

that those Israelis held captive in tunnels in Gaza

have been without their freedom,

separated from all of life?

Their faces are plastered onto giant posters

for passersby in Tel Aviv to see,

burning these hostages’ plight into memory,

their country longing for it to end.

What can the prisoners know of the crisis above the tunnels?

The violence, devastation, rubble, blocked aid trucks, hunger,

children’s lives cut short.

Failed attempts at a lasting ceasefire.

Instead, more retaliations, an eye for an eye,

an endless war.

Bring them safely home.

Let them begin healing.

The Palestinian family I’m sending money to in Gaza—

Home destroyed, living in a tent,

subsisting on lentils and hot salt water—

Had a moment of joy welcoming a baby boy,

Husband venturing out to buy overpriced flour

for his wife and 2-year-old son.

She needed medication to prevent blood clots,

needs nourishment to sustain their newborn child.

They all need superhuman strength.

Almost 500 online donors, sending funds for a year,

trying to keep this family going, give them some hope.

Will they rebuild their home in Gaza someday? How will they manage until then?

Will Gaza even still exist for them? Will they be displaced again?

Will these two children who’ve survived ever know a free Palestine?

What can the Gazans know of the air raid sirens, during the night,

Families hurrying to bomb shelters and safe rooms

In Tel Aviv apartment buildings?

Bring all safely home.

End the occupation,

The unholy bloodshed.

The ghosts of the lost ones permeate the ashen air.

Restless dreams, nightmares,

and oh,

what the living have seen,

have seen,

have endured.

BOULDER

by Jeremy Nathan Marks

Sunrise over the Flatiron Range near Boulder, Colorado.

A man has been charged with a federal hate crime and multiple other felonies after he allegedly used a makeshift flamethrower and incendiary devices to attack a crowd of people who were raising awareness for Israeli hostages in Gaza, injuring 12 victims. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, is alleged to have shouted “Free Palestine” as he attacked the crowd on Sunday. The FBI said Soliman told police he planned the attack for a year and had specifically targeted what he described as the “Zionist group”, the Associated Press reported. —The Guardian, June 3, 2025

The Boulder mountains began as fire
perhaps that’s why they are known
as the Flatiron Range

If you look into their hearts you will find
fossils from the sea. Simple single cellular
creatures. Who by fire and Who by water.

In America, many folks like to say our story
will end in flame. I’ve seen John 3:16 signs
at Coors Field and when Mel Gibson made
his film about Jesus, some pastor hung
a billboard above I-25 saying the Jews
Killed Christ. Jews kill Jews. Who gets to
say.

A man throwing Molotov cocktails
at people who want Israeli hostages freed,
is he the authority on Jews Israel’s
ambassador and foreign minister believe
him to be.

The pressure which births mountains is
hard to imagine. What it takes to sustain
foundational myths across time, rebuild
temples, dream of olive trees is a pressure
of perhaps equal force in human terms
and very hard to fathom.

As I write this, someone would have
you believe Jews possess a divine power
to solve or cause all the worst excesses
in the world. They might also think all
Palestinians want an eye for an eye.
What is a Mashiac. Who are the prophets.
Should we ask the mountains over Boulder.

The work of the Flatirons is not malevolent.
Moses didn’t receive tablets from Sinai
but on it. Universes come and go with each
blink of the high peaks.
Brahma sits on his lotus.
Generals confer in bunkers.
The Earth’s crust floats on lava.
Hashem has many names that depict
His moods.
Not everyone says He is merely a He.
Christians speak of trinities.

Today, free speech invites a fire fight.
We assemble in our mortar formations.
I pumped gas this morning
and it’s all I can taste.

DECLARATION OF A TERRORIST

Knee on a neck,
Match poised to strike,
With a final exhale,
Flames did ignite.

A firestorm erupted,
Fervent movement did arise,
Suffocated by a tsunami,
Of "All Lives Matter" cries.

Abusive power wears many masks,
Yet speaks a single tongue,
A requiem of callousness,
Tide of lives wrung.

Seized, silenced, deprived of voice,
Crushed by tempest creed,
As the faceless gasp for breath,
Dragged beneath waves of greed.

Palestinians butchered by golem rampage,
While leaders fiddle in their gilded bubble,
Israel's broken promises rain down,
As last dregs of conscience soak into the rubble.

Students denouncing genocide,
Abducted off streets like trash,
Futures and rights vanished,
Disappeared in a Gestapo flash.

Ukrainians in scorched ruins stand tall,
Courage unwavering, despite the pain,
Their sacrifice met with jealous disdain,
As an American führer bows to Putin's reign.

Sudanese starve on apathy alone,
Wasting away to hollow bone,
While the privileged eat cake,
Glutted, glued to their phone.

Immigrants condemned, banished beyond aid,
Hostages snatched to a circus cage,
Mercy extinguished; identity stripped,
Erased by those with contrived rage.

Tiny tots seen, once heard, now lost,
Voiceless, cast out with derision,
Birthright a farce, a due process mirage,
Dispelled with coldness and precision.

Judges defied, jailed with contempt,
Justice held ransom, chained to the bell,
As cracked scales teeter on the brink,
Ears crane for liberty's death knell.

If my conviction of unity,
Is intolerable sedition,
Call me a TERRORIST,
I embrace the affliction.

Truth-teller in an age of lies,
Empathetic when compassion dies,
Revolutionary when liberties decline,
Relentless when cruelty is the infection by design,
Outspoken when silence is the golden law,
Resilient by refusing to withdraw,
Inclusive when others build walls of divide,
Solidarity with the denigrated caste aside,
Transformative in spirit that cannot abide.

The most sacred amendment, first on the parchment,
Will withstand your calculated bombardment,
If TERRORIST I must be, in your criminalized fiction,
I'll wear your pointy yellow badge with distinction.

While propaganda devours,
Truth strikes with bolt and thunder,
Electrified, embers take flight,
Defiance echoes, never again forced under.

ARREST HIM. DON'T FÊTE HIM.

by Rob Okun
If Benjamin Netannotajew addresses a disjointed
session of Congress on July 24 will it be
a day that will live in infamy?

You actually have the gall to ask that question!?
Of course it would be.

Imagine “Arrest him. Don’t fête him protest signs popping up across
the country while organizers fill busses from 30 states with patriots
headed to DC to say no way will a wanted war criminal speak in
the People’s house

Liberals opposed to the prime sinister will sip wine at fundraisers in Takoma Park
twisting themselves
                                         into impossible-to-achieve yoga positions from
two-state downward dog solution to low down dirty dog final solution

“If Israel doesn’t qualify as a true democracy anymore, do we still
have to send them weapons—no strings attached?”
You actually have the gall to ask that question!?
Yes. We “have” to send them the weapons. If we don’t
all heaven might break loose—
beginning with an end to the slaughter of Israel’s semitic cousins

In this heatwave fever dream, the growing movement of next gen jews
will lead a multigenerational march for peace where it will be permissible
to use the following words and phrases:

38,000…mostly women and children…likely thousands more under the rubble…
humanitarian aid convoys blocked—again…West Bank “settlers” sadistically gone wild…authorities turn a blind eye…they’re committing war crimes… permanent cease fire

Note: If possible, however, not to ruffle the feathers of Israeli censors, avoid using
the words: Palestine… Palestinians… unprecedented number of murdered journalists…
bombed hospitals and schools…starvation…malnutrition…unsafe drinking water…and,
of course—genocide…
Oh—when discussing the recent daring rescue of four Israeli hostages, absolutely avoid mention of 274 Palestinians killed and 700 wounded. (It is permissible to use the phrase “collateral damage.”)

How the hell, you’d be right to ask, has the unlawful firm of Biden, Blinken & Austin
continued to arm this country, ruled by a madman, for so long?
You actually have the gall to ask that question!?

There are now—and always have been—Jews who have wept over and still
weep over the dashed dreams of a 1948 communal Israel-Palestine populated
by two peoples living side-by-side in a world
where no one ever heard the word nakba—or spoke
about forced displacement
Is the world ready now—after a full term pregnancy's length of war—
to invigorate that vision...take it from aspiration to realization?
Yaweh and Allah, I hope so.

SENATOR UNINFORMED

by Indran Amirthanayagam

A U.S. senator calls

the tents set up

at universities

camps for Hamas;

and he says

he supports Israel

and if Hamas

surrenders

and hostages

are released

the war will end.

He adds

that he is

deeply

disappointed

that the President

has paused

some shipments

of heavy weapons

to Israel. Deeply

disappointed

Senator

Fetterman?

That is how

I feel as well

about you.

Your ignorance

resounds. This

is not  binary.

Instead

of pledging

allegiance to Israel

come what may,

why don’t you

in turn bow

to the Palestinian

right of return

to homes from which

they have been

expelled since 1948?

Why don’t you cite

the ever smaller

wedge of Palestinian

land, about twenty

percent of what

was assigned

to them in 1948?

Can you manage

to turn your head

around that fact?

Twenty percent?.

One fifth of

a shrinking pie?

And you say,

hard disagree

deeply disappointed.

Mr. Fetterman

pitch your tent

in Gaza. Wait

for food

to be dropped

from the sky

Run and hide

when bombs

fall down

instead.

LEAFLET

by William Aarnes

Imagine yourself old enough

to have survived Operations

Cast Lead and Protective Edge.

Imagine a fellow refugee

            videoing flyers drifting

down from a blue sky,

then focusing on you

as you pick up a leaflet

at once a plea for news

about pictured hostages

            and an implicit warning

                        that soon your current shelter

will be demolished by bombs.

Imagine knowing the world

can see what’s happening.

Imagine knowing the world

keeps failing to react.

Imagine your dulled terror,

your bewildered loyalty,

your desperate rage.

Imagine your aimless trek.

Imagine your imagining

there’s somewhere to go

where the flyers

won’t drift down again

to tell you to keep moving.

Imagine the leaflet

as one of the keepsakes

            that will give purpose

to your children’s lives.

BOTH SIDES NOW, or THE THREE D’S

by Maria Lisella

Smoke rises following an Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip, as seen from southern Israel, on Dec. 16, 2023. (AP via Arab News)

"The plumes of smoke from tanks, artillery and the planes of the air force will continue to cover the sky over the Gaza Strip until we will achieve our goals," Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said. —NPR, January 21, 2024

Destruction, displacement, death;

the toll soars past 28,000 on one side
1,400 on the other; hostages by the
hundreds spark nonstop defiant

statements from the father whose
tech savvy son posts incendiary
messages from the warm rays
of the Florida sun. Like father, like son,

they ignite destruction, displacement, death.
Brethren in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen
rise to actions of the heart mind: force
meeting force, clamoring to save and

sacrifice sons, daughters. More destruction,
displacement, death. Deaf to calls for a ceasefire
postwar plans promising a two-state solution,
they focus only on Israel’s future credit rating.

Standing Together, Jews and Palestinians post:
“We are aching, all of us… It seems we are
not allowed to hurt for both.”
Now is the moment, “to hurt for both.”
