WE THE PEOPLE

by Mary Saracino

We the people
who believe in freedom
are rising
one heart
one voice
one vision,
warriors united for justice
standing shoulder to shoulder
arm-in-arm
women, men, children
of every age, race, creed, color,
ethnicity, economic condition.
Roaring and soaring
we seek to create
a more perfect union.
Fierce in our determination
we band together,
millions of souls,
to free our Republic from the fists
of autocrats, oligarchs, tyrants
and all who would silence us.
With our ancestors at our sides,
propelling us forward,
whispering in our ears: “Resist!”,
we will not be deterred.
We march onward
refusing to be mute about immorality,
refuting the lies, believing our eyes,
deploring the evils of
genocide, racism, misogyny,
xenophobia, homophobia,
transforming the present
into a brighter future for all.

DISTRACTIONS

by Mary Saracino

They want us to look away,
forget about the pedophiles
the wars,
the ICE raids,
the killing of nonviolent protesters,
the abduction and incarceration of children,
the deportation of immigrants
who are not criminals,
the grifting and the lies,
the evil that spews forth every day,
trying to silence us,
eviscerate the truth
that we see with our eyes,
bully us into abdicating our rights,
turn us against one another
so they can continue their unholy alliances
retain unwarranted power,
feed their insatiable greed,
make money off of countless atrocities.
But we are not distracted.
We are focused, lightning bright,
brave and unstoppable.
We will not look away.
We will not pretend that
war crimes are not being committed.
We see that cruelty is the law of the land.
We believe the women and children
who have been raped, silenced, forgotten.
We stand with the men with integrity who fight for justice.
We the people march to demand an end to the horrors,
to honor truth and decry genocide,
racism, misogyny, xenophobia
and all the many uncivil actions
and policies that seek to undo us
deny us our sacred humanity.
Together we shout: “No kings. No autocrats. No Oligarchs.
Never, ever again!”

I WEEP FOR THE WORLD

by Mary Saracino

I weep for the world,
for women and girls
for boys and men,
living and dying at the mercy
of those without mercy,
the merciless misers,
the autocrats who have sold
their empathy for power,
their compassion for money,
who have sacrificed their souls
for privileges they did not earn—or deserve.
The world they manifest burns
with injustice, oppression, war.
I weep for the planet,
Her essence assaulted,
decimated by greed,
and insatiable lust
for all that is unholy.
I weep for our non-human kin,
all creatures, great and small
all vegetation, too,
that seeks to live and thrive
under the sunlit sky,
bathed in the moonlit darkness,
moving through the seasons
with grace, grit, and gratitude.
We humans have lost our way.
The path is strewn with
obstacles to peace and prosperity,
the carnage of millennia,
the debris of lost memories
of how it should be,
how it could be
if we joined forces and
reclaimed our roots,
celebrated our ancient origins,
honored our connections
to all that is, and ever will be.

NO JUSTICE

by Mary Saracino

Source: Pinterest

In what pocket of my heart do I shove my grief
over vigilante white boys being exonerated?
In this land of justice, justice was not served.
The scales of Lady Justice have been upended.
The blindfold covering her eyes has been torn asunder.
She weeps with outrage.
She wails with sorrow.
She sees the abuse of power.
She calls us to resist.
And for the preservation of humankind
we must act
for love is a verb
and resistance is the antidote
to evil, to fear, to hatred,
the only medicine that
can heal
what festers deepest in the wounds of America's inglorious story.
No shining city on the hill,
a nation founded on unspeakable atrocities
must tourniquet its bleeding limbs
suture its oozing lesions
nurse its traumatized people back to wholeness.
Together we must embark on this
beautiful and necessary mending.
Or die trying.

A NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING

by Mary Saracino

Poster by JessicaSabogal for We the People which will flood Washington, DC with NEW symbols of hope on January 20. You can download the set of posters for free at http://bit.ly/wtpdownloads.

I will wear black on January 20
a national day of mourning
while the collective soul of America
lets loose a dirge as an illegitimate president
takes the oath of office
his place secured in history
by fake news, voter suppression
the deception of a foreign dictator
and his own brand of white supremacy
spewed from his bully pulpit of
racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia
and every other kind of –ism the world has ever witnessed

On the next day the women of the world will don
pink pussy hats, take to the streets in cities far and wide
to march in protest, defying the fake king, the tyrant
in the Oval Office
reclaiming their vulva power,  the power to
procreate truth, to name evil, to smash
the glass ceiling of lies that tries to silence us

BULLY PULPIT

by Mary Saracino
Cartoon by Steve Sack, Star-Tribune, August 31, 2016

"Wednesday gave Donald Trump the best of both worlds; a priceless photo-op with a foreign leader and maximum attention on his firebrand immigration message."—Jake Novak, senior columnist for CNBC, September 1, 2016.

The man on the mountaintop
spews lies, misinformation, intolerance
a nefarious Rumpelstiltskin
he spins bigotry and bullying into gold
his cheering minions listen,
eyes wide open, palms itching for more
believers who think his poison is truth
his empty promises a balm for all their ails
a fix for all the ways that life has failed them
they cheer him on, flanked by the media who know better,
the ones who give him a bully pulpit under the guise of objectivity
who dance with the devil to sell air time, ad space
as they profit from the hate they feign to shun
