LEFT TO PERISH

by Tricia L. Somers

This is a screenshot from the [WARNING!] sensitive video described in the poem.

This is the beginning

of the end of humanity

At 11:30pm I logged

onto my Instagram feed

First clip

from Motaz Azaiza

They removed

but he replaced it

Over one million likes

"Fully engulfed tents"

means people burn alive

I didn't cheat this time

I turned on the audio

Someone yelling

A man on the ground

kept raising his hand

into the air

Once, twice, again

slower each time

No one to save him

Innocence is not enough

Just like all the teachers

and their students in

over 500 bombed schools

The end of all humanity

begins with the end

of humanity

CINDER AND SADNESS

by Tricia L. Somers

AP File Photo Deir Al-Balah, Gaza Strip, October 2023

Cinder block pillows
and satin tears

Our sheets tied
into escape hatches again

The exquisite pain
of a child a mortal sin

Who has enough courage
to not slaughter the children ?

Who is strong enough
to resist the temptation

to crush the soft spot
of a newborn baby's skull?

Anyone? Anyone at all?

Every last Palestinian child
has more bravery and heart

than the moral army
sent to "cut the grass"

With each child killed
we go more in the red

We're going down fast
A centrifugal vortex

Are you strong enough
to win an election ?

Or too weak to stop
the killing of children?

ZERO SUM HUMANITY

by Tricia L. Somers
“All the People—Oppressed by Black Cloud,” 1982, by Evelyn Williams

Under the rubble
Our loved ones, homes, and any kind of hope
We’ve been robbed
by a criminal we cannot see
Our loved ones killed and already buried
We are victims of this Climate Crime Catastrophe

Under a bridge
Huddled with our scared children
Our faith has been shaken
and our babies are still...shaking
Invite the world to witness your humanity
Anxious and jittery awaiting a fleeting glimpse
Like an endangered species or already extinct

Under hooves and cracking whip
We find ourselves in seeking but a mere chance
Have us to walk over your bridges
Only in shame do you chase us away
You don’t necessarily need an earthquake
for your country to crumble away

Tricia L. Somers can be found at Outlaw Poetry, Milk Carton Blog, and the upcoming Rat’s Ass Review for Winter 2021. Also the semi-annual print journal The American Dissident includes poetry, essays and debates with the editor, who is known to be somewhat testy. Issues 41 and upcoming 42.
